Movies about The Consequences of War
The topic today is the consequences of war.
These movies focus on the civil side of war. Not so much the combat, weapons or soldiers, but more the people, and the decisions and policy of others that directly effected their fate, their freedom and their lives.
No comments Movies about China
One of the most intriguing and fastest growing countries of the 00′s, China captures our imagination with its communist/capitalist gender-bending. An interesting article that appeared today discusses China’s plea to the world – leave us alone! We’ll continue our atrocities and you can mind your own business: Read the NY Times article
The movies coming out of China are unique and versatile. In the US we are most familiar with the epic action films such as Hero and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, both elementary for any DVD collection. But if you want to get a better look at this country and its people, visit our complete China list.
And following on Ang Lee’s Oscar speech, feel free to review our related lists:

4 comments Newsweek article on foreign films
The article: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11432913/site/newsweek/
The theme of this article is Great films, bad box office. Read it and come back!
To me films are an escape. They replace the travels I can’t go on and allow me for a few hours to see the world. That’s why I watch non-English films. Just the term “foreign films” is enough to get me upset. English is pretty foreign to lots of people.. Also, using this term to categorize movies is just plain wrong. Foreign films are still documentaries, suspense thrillers, dramas, comedies…
DVD ideas features hundreds of films from various countries. To find movies based on the country depicted in the film (not necessary the country where the film was produced) visit our “All Topics” page. The list is in the column on the right hand side.
Enjoy!

6 comments Movies on Women Studies
As the issue of Abortions is making headlines once again this is a good opportunity to introduce films that deal with the place of women in society. The DVD ideas topic “Women Studies” currently features 52 films. These all center around powerful women, featuring stories of personal triumph, struggle and commitment to change in the face of societies driven by a history of bias and prejudice towards women. These movies inspire me because the struggle to be appreciated for talent, hard work and resourcefulness is one so many of us deal with all the time. I would like to highlight one film in particular – Vera Drake by British director Mike Leigh:
Based on a true story, Vera Drake tells of a woman in 1950s England who is devoted to caring for her family, but secretly aids women who want to terminated unwanted pregnancies. When the authorities find her out, Vera’s world and family life rapidly unravel.
