A few good movies to watch for on cable:

1. Cronicas – An acclaimed suspense thriller from 2005 is playing on HBO’s Latino channel throughout November. See the schedule.

2. Norma Rae – Playing this week on Cinemax. Featuring Sally Field. The film is based on the true story of Crystal Lee Jordan, who had been blacklisted by every textile union in the South for her fight against the conditions at those mills. However, with the success of NORMA RAE, Jordan began a new career as a spokeswoman for a textile workers union. See the schedule.

3. The Barbarian Invasions – Winner of Best Foreign Language Film in the 2004 Academy Awards®. This highly accesible character study from Canada won its lead actress Marie-Josée Croze a Best Actress award and its Screenplay writer Denys Arcand (also the film’s director) a Best Screenplay award at Cannes in 2003. Playing on IFC Channel Wednesday, October 25 at 11:00 AM and at 6:20 PM.

4. Noi – A beautiful movie from Iceland. Playing on the Sundance Channel Wednesday, October 25 at 1:45 PM.
