Tribeca Film Festival

I guess we’re not done with American Express quite yet. Yesterday I passed by the Madison Square Garden and saw a huge banner ad that looks something like this, but for the Tribeca Film Festival. Seems like part of the “my card, my life” campaign.

This reminded me that as the administrator of a site for quality DVD movies I should probably do a piece about the festival and point my readers to some award winners from past years. Now since less than 20% of all award winners since 2002 have been released on DVD the list will be quite short. We’ll post it here in the next few hours.
In the meantime you can read about the festival and its markets on IndieWire and decide if this is a vehicle for films or for the sponsors and the publicity they receive.

Iran Movies

Only 30 years ago, in the middle of the 1970’s, Iran was on a path to become an integral part of the modern-day world. But with money and power come great struggles. The issue of civil liberties has been very problematic in this country, even before the islamic revolution and the rise of the fundamentalist religious regime.

Today, while scaring us to death on one hand, they allow the release of wonderful movies on the other. And we are left to debate - is this really a Pyongyang-style government? Are the people treated fairly? Is there a chance for peace? And what about the bomb? These are all questions that relate to the immediate well-being of all of us.

Call me KARL

No use trying to avoid these guys. If you haven’t seen Frontline’s Karl Rove: The Architect and the documentary Bush’s Brain you might really be surprised with the news this nice couple ok’d leaking the name of an active CIA agent in order to make political gain. Once you see these films however you’ll realize these tactics are nothing new.

“Farmingville”

Farmingville, the award-winning documentary hailed by the New York Times as a “primer” on the explosive issue of illegal immigration, is being used across the country by teachers, police officers, community organizers and policy-makers to put a human face on one of the nation’s most polarizing issues.
